Every new year, millions of Americans make resolutions. Often these resolutions include weight loss and better health, a new job, going back to school, and things of that nature. A properly functioning vehicle is essential in getting you to the gym, job interviews, and making sure you get to class on time. So, with that in mind, you may want to add these six car care tips to your list of resolutions this new year.
Wash your car regularly. It may not sound like a big deal, but keeping your car clean is an important part of maintaining a vehicle. Not only will it help to prolong your paint finish resulting in a higher resale value, but it also helps to increase visibility keeping you safe on the roads.
Perform regular oil changes. It is often said that the oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. Oil changes help to keep your engine clean, lubricated and cool- prolonging its life. Most vehicles require an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Check your owner’s manual for your vehicle’s specific recommendation.
Inspect your tires regularly. As the only thing between your vehicle and the road, your tires are definitely one of the most important safety features of your vehicle. As such, you want to make sure they are in excellent condition. Check your tires at least once a month for tread wear and inflation. Your recommended psi can be found in your owner’s manual and sometimes on your driver’s side door jam. Do not go off of the psi written on the tire as this is not a vehicle specific recommendation. If you are unsure about your tire tread, perform the penny test. Take a penny and put it head down between two rows of tread. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, then your tread is too low, and the tire should be replaced.
Always keep your gas tank at least a quarter full. Letting your gas tank fall below a quarter full can be hard on the fuel pump. When the gas is allowed to go empty, the pump overheats. Too much of this can severely shorten its life. Also, it is a great way to make sure you are never stranded because of an empty tank!
Maintain a regular maintenance schedule. Ensure the longevity of your vehicle by performing regular maintenance as described by your vehicle’s manufacturer in your owner’s manual.
Make sure you are insured. Protect one of the more expensive investments you make by keeping it insured. Not only is it the law to have auto insurance in Arizona, but it will give you peace of mind as well.
Following these six simple tips in the coming year will help make sure your vehicle is up to the task of helping you accomplish all of your resolutions.
